Foundations of Western Freedom

“But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.”

James 1:25, The Holy Bible: King James Version
FDC are delighted to launch this series on the Foundations of Western Freedom.  We aim for dialogue, breadth and depth on all aspects of this topic, inspired in part by the turn to “cultural Christianity” of some key, highly popular thinkers and speakers, which has lead to new approaches (from a cultural Christian understanding) to Conservative ideas and foundations.  Are these new approaches fruitful and sustaining, or potentially illusory and destabilizing?  Do these new approaches open up avenues for Conservative understanding, or are they utopian in the sense of not really occupying any solid place or space?  We are genuinely posing such questions to our writers and commentators across FDC’s online publication platforms, and to all of our highly valued members.  We invite you to consider contributing an essay (blog style or higher level writing; short form or as long as necessary—possibly to be published in instalments if a contribution is very lengthy), on one or more of the following topics:
• Freedom in Christ (any aspect of this phrase from a Conservative/Christian perspective);
• The Judeo-Christian Foundations of Conservatism & Freedom;
• The limitations or benefits of Cultural Christianity’s notion of Conservatism & Freedom;
• Freedom and the Western Classics (focused or broadly discussed);
• Freedom and the Western Tradition (i.e., as above, but more broadly approaching or covering the modern period);
• Political theories of Freedom;
• Western Philosophies and/or Philosophers of Freedom;
• The concept of Freedom in Key Conservative/Christian Thinkers (political; theological; philosophical; contemporary thinkers; etc., may of course be focused on one thinker);
• Conservative Literary Authors and the Concept of Freedom;
• Aesthetics and Conservatism — Representing Freedom in the Arts;
• How Freedom is Now Under Attack—and How Conservatives can respond through Foundational Thinking.

Submissions will be published in a timely manner on Freedom Defence Canada’s website and other social media platforms.
