Why Our History Matters

I love History. Ever since my childhood I have found it fascinating. Who were these people? What were their lives like? What can I learn from them? What was it like to walk down a street in ancient Rome? For that matter, what was it like to be a pioneer in Upper Canada in the 1800s? These are the questions I ask myself and history provides the answers. Some say that history is dead, that it does not matter and does not affect us. I beg to differ. History is anything but dead. It lives in you every day and it affects everything we do and all our assumptions. But without an accurate knowledge of our history, we are rootless and lack a sense of who we are or what we could be.

The Need for a Common History

History is a tool that keeps nations together and preserves identity. No nation or people can survive without it. The story of a people, their narrative if you will, is essential to their survival. When that knowledge is taken away, or it fades, it is replaced by a spiritual darkness that is a prelude to a dark age. History, above all things, must be preserved, and our common story must be upheld. If not, then who we are and what we are can be manipulated by people intent on destroying us. That is, in fact, what is happening today. The purposeful destruction of our history is being gradually achieved and has been accelerated by events that extremists have taken advantage of.

Canada is No Exception

Like so many other western nations, Canada is no exception to the attempt to distort, erase and alter history. The woke influence in society and government, in tandem with media, academia and political elites, have been working hard to change Canadian history so that the narrative fits their purpose. To accomplish this, they have had to rewrite history so that it suits their interpretation and, along the way, helps them achieve their objectives. But how, specifically, are they doing it?

Canadian Founders and Heroes Besmirched

First, they take honourable figures from our history and present them as monsters. John A. Macdonald, the architect of confederation, once universally respected, becomes a genocidal figure from the past responsible for the establishment of a white supremacist patriarchal nation that must pay for its crimes. Any reasonable person can hear the extremism in this and sense the distortion of history. But it does not end there. Egerton Ryerson, a man who helped to establish Canada’s educational system in its early days is transformed into an exploitive monster alongside Macdonald, a man who took part in the establishment of the residential school system. Never mind that he took the time to learn an indigenous language (Ojibway), insisted that the schools be bi-lingual, (English and Indigenous) voluntary in attendance and remain day schools where the children could continue to live with their parents. No, his statue must come down, and his name must be removed from the university that once proudly bore it to be replaced by an innocuous title like Toronto Metropolitan University. This is the place Canada’s history has come to and there are, of course, even more examples of worthy and foundational Canadian heroes and founders who have been eliminated or besmirched.

The Passport Fiasco

Recently our government re-designed the Canadian passport. In the process of doing so they eliminated famous Canadians like Terry Fox and took the Fathers of Confederation off the passport. What did they replace them with? Well…predictably… they replaced them with innocuous and ridiculous scenes such as a person raking leaves (because we all know people raking leaves represents Canada) children jumping into a lake, and scenes of wildlife such as bears, narwhals and owls. The excuse given for this by Sean Fraser, minister of Refugees and Citizenship, was to make the Canadian passport harder to counterfeit. Really…? We all know this is a tremendous lie. Any caring Canadian can see what is going on. If you replace revered historical figures and heroes with narwhals and owls you are erasing Canadian history. Period. And what matters more, you are erasing the heroes who created and honoured our nation with their courage and devotion.

Erasing History is a Crime

History is a record of truth. Each person has a history just as every nation does, and it is critical that we preserve both so that we can make good decisions in the future. This hasn’t been happening in Canada. There is no shortage of examples of the elimination of Canada’s history initiated in the last eight to ten years, and they all have one thing in common. They are criminal in the sense that every time you memory hole history (as the Soviets and other totalitarian regimes did) you steal from the people and perpetuate lies. That has an immediate effect on the average citizen. They lose their identity, they can’t be proud of their country, and along the way they become demoralized, lose hope in their future and begin to forget who they are. Identityless, they wander through life trying to get by and prevent  the federal government from persecuting them for thought crime. Is that the kind of future we want for Canada?

How to Fight Back

The average citizen always wants to know how to fight back. If you care about Canada, you do too. Since this post is about History and the political manipulation of our past, let me suggest a few things you actually can do. First, buy books about Canadian history ( I mean the real history of Canada not the distorted Woke version) read them and tell others about them. Refuse to support the worldwide woke revolution, and you can do this by referring to places, things and events by their proper names, not the Woke version. Be an unabashed Canadian patriot. Attend Remembrance Day celebrations, and when you are there sing the older version of the national anthem. Fly the Red Ensign on Remembrance Day. Celebrate Canada Day, no matter what the Woke chattering classes tell you, even if they cancel it in your city or town. Defend those who want to uphold Canadian tradition, whatever political party they may be aligned with. If they are upholding Canadian history, they are on your side. Write concerned letters to papers about any violation of Canada’s true history and, if you are inclined, and able, write posts and put them up on the internet. Contact your local M.P. and M.L. A. and complain about this. Lastly, never give up. No matter what they do, stand up for Canada’s real history and your nation’s story. The rewards for doing so may be much more than you think.

Couldn’t agree more Perry! I too am a history lover haven’t gotten my bachelor of arts in History from McMaster University. We need to know what has transpired in the past to appreciate the present and not make the same mistakes in the future. Unfortunately our present government want us to forget the past so it is easier for them to make a Canada of their own creation.Very sad and very wrong.

An excellent article as usual, Perry. I believe that ultimately, history belongs to God, it is HIS story. It is God’s purposes worked out in the affairs of men and nations. As such God has given man a memory whereby he can access history that he might know, ultimately, what is true. Modern progressives, leftists and Marxists (among other revolutionaries) who live on the basis of lies, need to wipe out man’s memory so he cannot compare their radical utopian dreams with the truth learned from history. Why? Because their ‘utopian dreams’ ALWAYS become dystopian nightmares for the simple reason… Read more »

Great points made. As a follower of Jesus Christ, the most accurate ancient history is that recorded in God’s word, the Bible. Those that try to erase history will also eventually try to ban the Bible.

Amen Mike. The blind leading the blind and they both fall into a ditch. Mr. Trudeau and his ilk are so willfully ignorant they cannot see the value of taking pride in our historical accomplishments and using our mistakes to correct and modify our present actions. Since critical thinking left the H.O.C. with Elvis, we have seen progressive ideas sweep away everything that had value. There is no opportunity to learn. This is not progress, it is radical imposition of untested and unproven policies, as you say, shaped in the image of their own beliefs. Justin Trudeau must lie in… Read more »

Thank you, Perry, for a great article. I cannot reach back, touch or modify the past, but it is incumbent upon me, to defend and protect it. It teaches us about ourselves, our communities and future. History is a test bench for ideas and all the “what ifs” of life.  It is not confined to dusty old textbooks but is a record of the dreams and fears of real-life people living real life experiences. Some of the historical books that I have read are difficult to synthesize. The Guns of August by Barbara Tuchman, is one of these. The book “concerns herself… Read more »

What a great letter, Perry! You’ve nailed it. The time is now to stand up and say enough of the nonsense.
